Incidentally, the anthologies feautre the first three Gotrek & Felix short stories by William King, which were later collected in Trollslayer which was the start of the iconic Gotrek & Felix novel series. Notable novels from this period are Drachenfels, Beasts in Velvet and Genevieve Undead by Kim Newman Zaragoz, Plague Daemon and Storm Warriors by Brian Stableford (the Orfeo Trilogy) and the three anthologies Ignorant Armies, Wolf Riders and Red Thirst.
The settings of Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 had not yet been cast in stone, and the authors had a very free hand. The first literary effort by Games Workshop, in the form of Games Workshop Books, took place towards the end of the 80s and featured stories and novels from several well-known contemporary authors from the British science-fiction, fantasy and horror scene, including Kim Newman, Brian Stableford (under the pseudonym Brian Craig) and Ian Watson.
